A project developed at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University TEKNOPARK has initiated greenhouse cultivation using geothermal resources. Project Coordinator Prof. Dr. Mehmet Şener stated that this innovative initiative offers domestic and national solutions to the food crisis by assessing Niğde's geothermal potential.
Soilless Farming in Geothermal Heated Greenhouses
As part of the project, greenhouse cultivation will be conducted on an area of 40 acres using the heating power of a well rented from a licensed geothermal field owned by the Niğde Governorate's Special Administration. Soilless farming methods will be used for tomato production in these greenhouses, which will also employ local residents. Sixty women and forty men will find job opportunities in the greenhouse, which operates with modern automation systems.
Turkey's Geothermal Power and Export Goals
Prof. Dr. Şener highlighted that Turkey's geothermal potential ranks among the top three in the world, emphasizing Niğde's potential for development in this area. As a result of the studies, ground temperatures reaching up to 250-300 degrees Celsius will be achieved, reducing carbon emissions through the use of renewable energy sources. The produced tomatoes are targeted for export abroad.
