Muş cabbage yield: 90 Million TL income

The cabbage harvest continues in Muş Plain, which has the third-largest cultivable area in Turkey, contributing an estimated 90 million 365 thousand Turkish Lira to the local economy this year. The cabbage, cultivated on 5,194 hectares in Muş Plain, is being harvested. Farmers in Bağlar Village, affiliated with the central district, start harvesting as the first light of the day appears. Cabbages, sold especially to eastern provinces and cities like Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa, and Izmir, become an essential item on tables during the winter months. Muş Çorti Soup and Çorti Pickles made from cabbage have been registered and granted geographical indication by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.

Mehmet Gün, the Director of Agriculture and Forestry for the province, toured the cabbage fields in Bağlar Village and emphasized the importance of cabbage cultivation in Muş's agricultural activities. Gün, chatting with the farmers, mentioned that they anticipate a contribution of approximately 90 million 365 thousand TL to the local economy from cabbage harvest, saying, 'White cabbage is one of our products that is suitable for the ecosystem of Muş. Cabbages produced by our farmers have been in demand in Muş and surrounding provinces for years. It is a high-value-added product. It holds significant importance as one of the symbolic products of Muş. Our province has received 4 geographical indications, two of which are Çorti Soup and Çorti Pickles made from white cabbage. In 2022, cabbage cultivation was carried out on an area of 2,850 hectares, resulting in approximately 9,965 tons of product. Within this framework, for the year 2023, we expect 18,073 tons of product from an area of 5,194 hectares. It is anticipated that this product will contribute approximately 90 million 365 thousand TL to our province.'

Adnan Sönmez, who began harvesting as the first light of the morning broke, stated that they continue the harvest. He mentioned, "We started harvesting our cabbages, which we planted in the spring season, as of the 10th month. We irrigated six times during the summer. We offer them for sale at 60 TL per unit and 6 TL per kilogram. We sell cabbages to surrounding provinces like Bingöl, Elâzığ, Bitlis, Batman, and Şırnak."
