Fishermen are hopeful for a good season with mackerel Haber

Fishermen are hopeful for a good season with mackerel

Fishermen have high expectations for both sea bass and horse mackerel catches in October and November as well. Fishermen registered with the Kozlu Fisheries Cooperative are continuing their preparations ahead of the fishing season, which starts on September 1. They are repairing their nets, and they mentioned that recreational fishing has already begun. Gökmen Ay, a 50-year-old cooperative member who has been fishing for 35 years to support his family, expressed optimism about the new season's mackerel catch. Ay anticipated a season of abundance, saying, "I've been in the fishing industry since I was 14. Fishing is our livelihood, and we have no other source of income. We are preparing for the season with newly made nets. Everything looks promising for a good season this year, but it depends on the weather. If the weather stays good, it will be a great fishing season. The current northerly winds are not ideal for mackerel, but it's just a few days' weather. We expect it to return to normal. This year, our people will have plenty of fish. Horse mackerel is currently abundant in most Black Sea ports. Mackerel, sea bass, and horse mackerel roe are plentiful this year. We have high expectations for sea bass and horse mackerel in October and November. If the weather behaves as we hope, our people will enjoy plenty of fish this year." Ay also noted that fish such as mackerel, sea bass, and horse mackerel feed on smaller fish, which could mean a decrease in anchovy numbers this season. He added: "Mackerel, sea bass, and horse mackerel need to eat continuously to grow. Especially sea bass and horse mackerel feed on whatever small fish are available. Mackerel does the same. Anchovies might be scarce this year. However, the outlook is good. We expect a successful season. I hope our fishing friends will do well. Best wishes to the recreational fishers." Ay also mentioned their request for smaller boats (under 12 meters) to be allowed to go out to sea with recreational fishers starting from August 15, which would have allowed them to catch some fish before the larger trawlers start on September 1. He expressed concern that the market prices might drop significantly once the larger trawlers begin fishing, making it harder for them to earn a living. He concluded by highlighting the financial strain from the costs of boxes, foam, fuel, and provisions.

The appearance of mackerel before the fishing season has encouraged fishermen Haber

The appearance of mackerel before the fishing season has encouraged fishermen

Fishermen in the Black Sea have indicated that there will be a plentiful supply of mackerel this year, and the early signs are already promising. They believe that the early appearance of mackerel is a positive indicator for a bountiful season ahead. The appearance of a few mackerel caught by coastal fishermen has further raised hopes for the new season. After the fishing ban ends on September 1, large boats will begin the season with mackerel fishing. Coastal fishermen are encouraged by the sight of a small number of mackerel caught in their lines, and they find the early signs promising for the upcoming season. Fisherman Erkan Acuner noted, "Mackerel has started to appear. We are expecting a bountiful season this year. Our friends have caught some mackerel with their lines. The early appearance of mackerel suggests it will be abundant. As with every year, we hope for a good season and that we won't be disappointed." Fisherman Ömer Usta added, "The signs indicate that there will be plenty. Mackerel has started to hit the lines among the horse mackerel. Its gradual appearance is a good omen for the season. The signs suggest it will be abundant. In some years, mackerel didn't appear, but it's now showing up in its usual time. The weather is also favorable, so we are hopeful that mackerel will be plentiful. Last year, mackerel was more common around Şile, and there wasn't much fishing in our area. We hope that this year it will be more prominent in our region."
