Bad weather in Marmara raises fish prices
Adverse weather conditions have impacted the fish stalls at the Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality Bandırma Fish Market. The storm, effective in the Southern Marmara region since last week, left some stalls empty and caused fish prices to soar.
The Southern Marmara and the Sea of Marmara have been under the influence of adverse weather conditions since last week. Due to the storm, most fishing boats couldn't go out to sea, and the fish stalls at the Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality Bandırma Fish Market were also affected. The kilogram price of Marmara anchovies rose to 180 Turkish Lira, and many fish stalls remained empty.
Fisherman Metin Çokgezenler, in his statement, mentioned that the weather had worsened, especially in the last 3 days, causing fish prices to rise accordingly. Çokgezenler said, 'Due to our fishing boats not being able to operate for the past 3 days, the kilogram price of Marmara anchovies has risen to 150 to 180 Turkish Lira. The kilogram price of Black Sea anchovies has reached 100 Lira. The kilogram price of medium-size horse mackerel is 80 Lira, and the large-size horse mackerel is up to 120 Lira. The kilogram price of sardines is going between 50 and 70 Lira, as usual.'
Çokgezenler expressed that they expect the weather conditions to improve in the next few days, stating, 'When the weather conditions normalize, fish prices will naturally decrease. The reason some stalls are not open is the high prices and the limited amount of fish coming in.'
