Melons that get their flavor from the Konya Plain are in the global market

Çumra melon, one of the major sources of income for the Çumra district of Konya and registered with a geographical indication, is also being exported to global markets. The cultivation of Çumra melon, known for its unique taste, color, and aroma, is increasing each year. Planting begins at the end of April, and harvesting starts in mid-August. Farmers take meticulous care of the melons, treating them as if they were their children. During the harvest, melons are first cut from the vine and then collected individually by hand from the fields. Afterward, the melons are shipped not only across Turkey but also to international markets. Farmer Ramazan Akyol, who grows melons in the Çumra region, said, “We start planting melons towards the end of April. We use mulch, a plastic covering in our region, and we apply drip irrigation. We plant the melons 70 centimeters apart. About a week to ten days after planting, we start filling the areas we call 'throats,' which prevents air from getting in and stops weeds from growing, making it more beneficial. With God's permission, the period between planting and harvest is 75 days. We monitor irrigation weekly, adjusting according to the crop’s condition. We care for the melons as if they were young children. We visit the fields daily, ensuring proper measurement of water, chemicals, and fertilizers according to the crop’s needs. We don’t give more or less than required; everything is provided equally.” Akyol noted that the price of melons at the field is 7 TL, and on the market, it ranges from 10 to 13 TL. He added, “We do not use any unnecessary products; only essential treatments like mildew and fungus control are applied. The taste of our melons comes from the soil of this plain and region. Customers find us, not the other way around. Our melons are excellent, high-quality, and sweet, so people come from all over Turkey and even from abroad, traveling long distances just to taste them. They cannot find such taste, size, and quality anywhere else. This is why they choose us, and both we and they benefit. Prices have remained the same as last year. We are grateful for the yield and quality of the soil. Currently, the price at the field is 7 TL, and at the stalls, it ranges from 10 to 13 TL. The producer, intermediary, and consumers all benefit.” Food engineer Hüseyin Altındaş from Mersin’s Silifke district explained that they dry melons for export. “In our facility, we use freeze-drying technology to remove all moisture from products. We primarily work with fruits and vegetables due to the region's focus. We plan our work according to the fruit and vegetable conditions in the region. Our encounter with this melon was somewhat coincidental during a business trip. We came here after seeing the melons and discovered that the soil, region, and climate of this place are significantly better. This is important to us because we dry the products, and the higher the sweetness and aroma, the more crucial it becomes for the end consumer. The melons you see are sent not only within our country but also to places like America and Germany.”

The producer distributed 600 tons of melons and watermelons for free Haber

Residents flocked to the field upon hearing the news. Melons and watermelons were planted on 220 acres in Yılmaz Mahallesi, Salihli, by Ahmet Akbaş, Metin Akbaş, and Eyüp Çakar. The three partners spent approximately 1.5 million TL on the crops. When the harvest time arrived, they informed potential buyers. When buyers offered between 100,000 to 300,000 TL for the produce, the three partners decided to distribute the melons and watermelons for free rather than sell them at these prices. They announced on social media that the melons and watermelons were available for free harvest, inviting people to come to the field. Following this announcement, people flocked to the field. Some arrived by tractor, others by motorcycle or car, and carried the produce away in sacks, bags, or under their arms. Ahmet Akbaş, one of the landowners, expressed happiness that the public could harvest the melons and watermelons. He said, “This is a 220-acre field. We planted melons on about 65 acres and watermelons on the rest. The total cost for the melons and watermelons was around 1.5 million TL. As harvest time approached, we began receiving offers from buyers. Those who came to the field were bargaining, but they offered ridiculous amounts like 100,000, 200,000, or 300,000 TL. Given that the product cost us 1.5 million TL, we were not willing to sell it at such low prices. Instead of selling the product we worked hard to grow at those prices, we decided to give it away to the public. After announcing on social media that the produce was free to collect, people rushed to the field. We had expected 300-350 tons, but we found out that there were over 600 tons of melons in the field.”

The melon and watermelon harvest has begun in the Bafra Plain Haber

The melon and watermelon harvest has begun in the Bafra Plain

‘Products like sugar’ have taken their place on the shelves. The season for watermelon, which started at 60,000 liras per dönüm, has now dropped to 35,000 liras per dönüm. With a production cost of 25,000 liras per dönüm, watermelon prices are expected to rise again in the coming days. Watermelon producers have stated that the sunburned watermelons from Adana are being sold cheaply by markets, which has lowered the market price. Mehmet Bilgiç, a watermelon producer from Karaburç neighborhood, said, “Watermelon started the season well this year. The fields were bought at high prices. But now the market is sluggish, and there are no sales. The sunburned watermelons from Adana have hit the markets. Markets are selling them cheap, which has disrupted the market. Markets buy cheap and sell at 9-10 liras per kilo. This has greatly lowered our market. Currently, prices have dropped to 30-35 thousand liras per dönüm. The cost is already 25,000 liras. We started the season at 50,000 to 60,000 liras per dönüm. They said, ‘Watermelon burned in Adana.’ Afterward, there was a sharp decline. Now, we have started to harvest the black watermelons. The striped watermelons will be ready in a week. We think the market will stabilize around the 15th of this month. Between the 15th and 20th, our market will coincide with Bilecik’s. Adana’s season will end, and we hope to find what we expect. Last year, prices were faster. This year started quickly, but the quality is slightly better than last year. We expect there to be a liveliness.” Melon producers are satisfied In Samsun’s Bafra Plain, the harvest of greenhouse melons planted on 9,500 decares has also begun. Many producers who started harvesting the greenhouse melons planted on April 25th are doing the harvest themselves due to labor wages being 1,150 liras per day. The Bilgiç brothers, who say they have no problems with marketing, mentioned that the yield is high due to favorable weather conditions. Producer Yunus Emre Bilgiç said, “Today, we are harvesting our first melons. Bafra melons have now hit the market. Prices are between 8.5-9 liras per kilo. As melons start to come out in the plain, prices have dropped. We expect prices to rise in the coming days.” Producer Yavuz Selim Bilgiç added, “We are now making the first harvest of our greenhouse melons planted on April 25th. The costs are high but not unmanageable. I think the prices are normal. Labor wages are 1,150 liras per day. Since our family is large, we generally don’t need to hire labor. We do the planting, digging, and such tasks with workers, but we do the harvest ourselves. We handle the watering, care, and marketing ourselves. We don’t have any issues with marketing. We harvest the product upon request, we don’t take it to the market, it has a ready place, and the customer is waiting for us. The yields are very good due to the weather conditions. Last year, we didn’t get much due to the weather conditions. This year’s marketing is better than last year. Last year, prices were worse. We have costs, but they are manageable. Melon is a profitable crop. It cannot be compared to watermelon. You harvest watermelon once, but melon can be harvested 7-8 times. Bafra melon’s quality comes from its flavorful soil. Compared to melons from outside, Bafra melons are more durable and sweeter. We have been in this business for years. If it doesn’t sell or market well, it won’t be produced. No one buys an unpopular product. We sell a popular product. We continue to promote the name of Bafra.
