Bee honey extraction continues in Ardahan

Excitement surrounds the honey extraction of Ardahan flower honey, which has been certified with a geographical indication by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.

Ardahan flower honey, produced organically in hives placed in high-altitude pastures and mountains with rich flora above 2,000 meters, significantly contributes to the local economy. After a labor-intensive process, the honey, known for its unique aroma, has begun its first extraction. The "Ardahan flower honey," collected by the Caucasian bee, which is among the world's top four bee breeds and gathers nectar from over a thousand plants, is also renowned for its quality. Ardahan honey, certified with a geographical indication, is sold between 700 and 1,000 TL.

"Geographical Indication Organic Honey Project"

Ilhan Evliyaoğlu, President of the Ardahan Beekeepers Association, announced the start of the Geographical Indication Organic Honey Production project. Evliyaoğlu said, “The organic honey production project, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, will be implemented this year. Twenty-four of our beekeepers have applied for this project. They will receive 10 hives each, along with beekeeping equipment and materials. By 2025, both geographical indication organic honey production and geographical indication honey production will be carried out. This project will advance Ardahan beekeeping to the next level.”

Evliyaoğlu noted that organic honey production differs from other honey production methods, stating, “Beekeepers producing organic honey will be located outside of residential areas. The honey produced must be hygienic. These producers will be continuously monitored by organic certification companies. They will only be able to produce honey with a company that meets the criteria.”
