In Amasya, the cherry branches are laden, with a yield of 50,000 tons.

The harvest of the geographically indicated Amasya cherry has begun fruitfully, with an expected yield of 50,000 tons this year. Amasya Governor Yılmaz Doruk announced that the cherries produced are exported to various countries, primarily Germany and Russia.

Germany and Russia Lead in Cherry Exports

Governor Doruk explained that cherries are sold all over the world and the country, stating, "In 2024, we expect a yield of 50,000 tons from 28,000 decares, an increase of 39% compared to the previous year. We export primarily to Germany and Russia, as well as to Iraq and other countries."

"Where there are good apples, there are also good cherries"

Wishing the producers a bountiful harvest during his visit, Governor Doruk recalled that the '0900' variety cherry, one of the city's most important export products, was geographically registered as 'Amasya cherry' two years ago. He remarked, "Where there are good apples, there are also good cherries. Now, alongside Amasya apples, we also have Amasya cherries."

Governor Doruk noted that Turkey, a leader in cherry production, ranks third in the world for cherry exports. "The international market prefers Turkish cherries for their quality, long harvest period, competitive price, and the preservation and transportation of the product in the cold chain. In Amasya, cherries are grown at altitudes ranging from 200 meters to 1,300 meters, with a harvest period that can last up to 75 days. The harvest period varies depending on altitude and seasonal temperature, typically running from mid-May to the end of July," he explained.

Ali Pehlivan, a long-time cherry producer, hosted the harvest event, which was also attended by Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Gürol Çetin and Amasya Chamber of Agriculture President Mustafa Cebeci.
